Day 4 : February 14th

Image
On this day, we went to Long Beach as usual to help out in the VA Hospital. The 14th was also Valentine's day, so it seemed there were less people than usual that needed our help, as there were other organizations there that seemed to be helping out. The four of us did not do as much work as we usually do. It was overall a good day as we did help out the Veterans. It was mostly making sure the Veterans got to where they needed to go. We all did our share of the work. As we have all signed privacy contracts relating to the privacy of the veterans we help, it is very difficult to share images of the work that we do, so I can only post photos of the actual hospital the day we were there.

Day 2: First Day of Volunteering

On our first day, we left Sage around 8:20 and arrived at the Volunteer Office at the VA around 9:00. We then checked in with the volunteer office, where we then got our badges from the VA police, and met back the the Volunteering office. We then went into the hospital where the rest of the volunteers wait around until there is something to do. Most of our job requires us to either be blockers for other volunteers, or to bring different patients to different parts of the hospital.

Day 3

As a group we arrived at the VA Hospital around 9:00. When we got there, we all had to get our new badges from the VA Security office. Once we got our badges, we reported to the volunteering office, and spent the rest of the time until noon, volunteering. Like the last time, most of the volunteering we do, is pushing patients on wheelchairs from one part of the hospital to the other. While waiting for a task to be done, we wait at the volunteering waiting room, where we talk with other volunteers, who most are veterans themselves. Our plans for the future are to continue to volunteer at the VA Hospital.

Day 1: Getting the Forms

During our first day, we drove in one car up to the VA Hospital in Long Beach to get the forms from Building 50, the volunteering office at the VA. At the volunteering office, we met with a nice gentleman, who sat down with the four of us, and let us know what we need to do. He was very informative and also very kind to not only us, but to his employees. Every time he walked past a colleague, he would make sure to greet him or her. We made sure to be respectful to the employees, follow directions carefully, and ask questions as we were going through the process of filling out paperwork. This paperwork included scheduling an appointment for our volunteer orientation day (October 6, 2017 at 7:30 am) and also scheduling an appointment for our TB screening (days vary for each member). We all look forward to volunteering at the VA so that we can positively accompany veterans and make sure that they are not forgotten.
